Love on the Ground - L'amour par terre 1984

Two actresses (Chaplin and Birkin) are requested by a rich and enigmatic playwright to appear in a special play he has written for a single performance at his chteau. Rivette's interest in theatre and literature - the two women have the names of the Bronte sisters, Charlotte and Emily - provides some pleasure, as does the chateau setting, but the game-playing becomes pretentious and tedious after a while. It lacks the magic (both literal and figurative) of Celine and Julie Go Boating, which Rivette made a decade earlier, also about two women forced to act out roles in a strange house.
